Academics

The vision of Grey College Primary is to provide quality education and nurturing for each learner to develop their God-given potential optimally.  We encourage our learners to participate and achieve higher levels of cultural and academics inside and outside our school.
Through all its years of existence Grey College Primary has achieved an excellent academic standard.  The dedicated teachers strive to provide the best education and present the learners with a wide variety of learning areas.  The teachers attend regular workshops, meetings, demonstrations, displays and lectures.  They are experts at the forefront of their specific learning areas.

An excellent academic atmosphere is created in every classroom where the latest technology is used to provide the best for each individual learner.

The learners are exposed to a number of academic courses and competitions to inspire and help them to excel in certain learning areas.  Amongst other,  some of the competitions are Conquesta Olympiad, Amesa and Nautilus Maths, Maths Quiz, Enviro Quiz, Entrepreneurs Competitions and Science Expo.  During 2007 40 of our learners took part in the Science Expo.  27 of our learners were medal winners (10 gold, 9 silver, 8 bronze).  Grey won the Primary Schools section.

The IT-centre is used to keep the learners in pace with the latest technology.  All classes up to Grade 7 use this facility on a weekly basis.  A fully equipped media centre exposes the learners to an extensive library filled with sources for reading and research.

The development of an excellent foundation for every individual pupil forms the basis of academic achievement in the Primary School.  This is verified by the high performance of former students from our institution.

Grey College Primary consists of three academic phases.  The first phase is the Preprimary where the learner is being exposed to basic foundation of his academic career.  This is conducted through informal teaching.

The second phase is the Foundation Phase from Grade 1 – 3.  This phase lays the foundation for the next phase, the Intermediate Phase (grade 4 – 6).  During this time the learner is exposed to all 8 the Learning Areas.  According to the new Education system, Grade 7 is the beginning of the Senior Phase which commences in the Primary School and continues in the High School.  The Senior Phase is completed in Grade 9.

Grey College Primary aspires to offer a sound academic education to all learners irrespective of age and culture.  Each learner has the opportunity be successful.

Our school’s language policy is in line with the Language in Education Policy in Terms of Section 3(4) (m) of the National Education Policy Act, 1996 (Act 27 of 1996).

All learners from grade 1 offer their LoLT and one additional language in either Afrikaans or English.

Because Grey Primary promotes Multilingualism as prescribed by the DoE, Sesotho is introduced as a second additional language in grade 1 through a communicative approach only.  From grade 4 and onwards, learners are assessed in all three languages they offer.  This is linked to the 16 strategies of the Manifesto on Values, Education and Democracy where it is stated clearly: Make multilingualism happen.

During school all announcements, correspondence and assemblies are conducted in Afrikaans and English.  Sport coaching and cultural instruction are also done in Afrikaans and English.  In a multilingual country like South Africa it is important that learners reach high levels of proficiency in at least two languages and that they are able to communicate in other languages.

REMEDIAL OR SUPPORT TEACHING

Who qualifies?

Learners who are under-achieving in relation to their potential [albeit they may be performing close to or above the grade average], are possibly displaying specific educational needs!

Support Teaching or Remedial Aid, is given in the Learning Areas of Mathematics and Lolt [Language Of Learning & Teaching].

Prior to inclusion in Support Teaching, it is a pre-requisite that
# classroom interventions as suggested by the SBST have been implemented;
# class– and subject teachers provide the learners with didactic aid for a minimum period;
# that parents supervise the homework and provide sufficient structured study times;
 # parents understand that their sons must be reassured of their  support, acceptance and unlimited love.

Should it be deemed necessary, specialists of other disciplines [i.e.: Speech -, & Occupational Therapy as well as medical specialists – regarding concentration, ADS & ADHS] could be consulted too.   With these results in hand, we are equipped to address each learner's individual needs.    Whilst the stronger modalities are utilized, the specific weaknesses are stimulated and developed optimally.   Learners with specific educational needs are entitled to receive Support Teaching!

 Some of the RE classes are presented during the school day, whilst others are offered extramurally – depending on the Time Table.   This is in order to enable each learner to attend a minimum of three sessions [of approximately 30 minutes each] per week.  These may vary from individual – to group sessions [in the latter a maximum of four learners are accommodated].

Primarily this entails the observation of and detailed breaking up of processes as demonstrated by the learners.   Following this, it is possible to restructure, develop and embody the desired concepts and processes.

At Grey College we are in the fortunate position of having excellent technological aids.   Amongst others there are a variety of computer programmes - which are upgraded and added to on a regular basis.

Remedial Aid does not bring about an instant, magical cure.   Results are often seen after a lot of hard work over a period of time.   Close interaction between the Support/Remedial – and Class Teachers, the therapist(s) and the parents, is essential.

We invite our parents to keep in close contact with us, as we need to be close associates in empowering our boys!

A positive approach and self-esteem is the first of many steps in achieving any results.   Positive parental input and support is vital, as our boys need to know and understand that [irrespective of learning processes], we are proud of them and love them just as they are.   They áre precious, God-given – and the future!
