Hostels and Boarding

Boys are normally admitted into a boarding house in grade 8. At present there are 350 boarders in the three secondary school hostels. Murray House and Brill House are National Monuments.


Murray House Murray House

Murray House for grade 8 and 9 boys is named after the first rector of Grey College, the famous Rev Andrew Murray.

Murray House Brill House

Brill House is named after another famous headmaster, Dr Johannes Brill. It houses grade 9 and 10 boys.

Murray House Leith House

Leith House is named after the former Bursar of the school, Thomas Leith. The original building was replaced by a modern hostel, housing grade 11 and 12 boys.

Murray House Oelschig House

Oelschig House is the only recognized hostel for primary school boys from grade 1 to 7. Mr. Leon Oelschig, an Old Grey and very loyal parent made the house available. This was for Old Greys who farmed in the Bloemfontein district and wanted their sons to attend Grey College Primary. Presently 14 boys are being accommodated here.

Murray House Dining Hall

Hamilton Hall is the dining hall for boarders. The staff and boarders had to adapt to receiving wonderful meals via the self-service system. The architect was Sir Herbert Baker. This building is also a National Monument.
